A New Haven Sister City Since 1979
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. New Haven’s Hopkins School has started a sister school relationship with Lycée Louis Pasteur, a school in Avignon. The in-person programs have been halted by COVID, but they have connected through Zoom for English and French classes.
What’s Our Connection?
Avignon’s rich history and magnificent medieval architecture attracts throngs of tourists. The city is divided into two parts: the old city, surrounded by an ancient wall, and the new, modern city outside.
What is Avignon Known For?
Palais des papes and the city of Avignon, by the Boucicaut Master at the beginning of the 15th century.
The City of Avignon was founded during the Roman Empire. It was a fortified city, which means it was surrounded by a massive wall. While it was occupied by the Romans the city was named Avennio. In the 13th Century, Avignon became the headquarters of Catholicism. It became part of the Republic of France in 1791.

The Pont Saint-Benezet Bridge was built in 1177. It used to span the Rhone River. However, after several collapses and repeated attempts to rebuild the bridge, the city decided to preserve the bridge in its incomplete state.

Throughout the entire month of July, the city of Avignon celebrates the Festival D'Avignon. This festival is the oldest theatrical festival in Europe. This festival is comprised of two smaller festivals, the more formal International Theatre Festival and the avant-garde OFF Festival. Both consist of many performances, including music, dance, and theater.
